Introduction

The North Staffordshire Railway Study Group (NSRSG) was formed in October 1995 to bring together people with an interest in the North Staffordshire Railway, in order to increase the knowledge of the railway, and to improve the understanding of the role of the railway within the community it served.

The inaugural meeting of the Study Group agreed that the main aims of the group should be:

  • to gather together as much surviving information as there is about the NSR
  • to try to ensure that it is not lost
  • to make such information more widely available to those who have an interest in the railway.

Meetings

The Group usually meets four times a year. Two meetings take the form of informal gatherings and the other two are more formal in nature - one taking in the AGM. The meetings are usually held in November (the AGM meeting), March, May and September and the indoor meetings are usually held at the Gladstone Pottery Museum, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent.

Publications

The Group currently publishes its newsletter, Loop Lines, six times per year and The Journal of the NSRSG bi-annually.

The Journal is the means by which the Group publishes articles on and about the North Staffordshire Railway. Follow this link for the Journal Index - an index into the content of all Journals. A small number of copies of each one remain available.

Loop Lines addresses membership matters for the Group and covers items of a more immediate and topical nature, such as advanced notice of Group meetings, other railway-related meetings, general items of railway news and members' queries (and hopefully the answers).

The Group is also organising the printing of reproductions of selected editions of the Working Timetable. The first two of these have been produced free-of-charge to Group members, though copies are also available to non-members at a cost of £6 from the Group Secretary (see below for contact details).

Finally the Group is building an archive of photographs, taken principally in the pre-Grouping era, which is being committed to CD-ROM. Topics currently covered include photographs of locomotives, coaches, stations, signals boxes, Stoke Shed and a miscellany of wagons, as well as groups of photographs from the collections of well-known authorities on the railway. This archive is available only to members, solely for their own use, and for a small charge.

On-line Discussion Group

The Group maintains an on-line, moderated Discussion Group which is open to all Group members. Summaries of these discussions will be published in the Journal so that members unable to access the Internet are kept informed, and are also able to contribute via the Newsletter or Journal correspondence columns.

To access, and hopefully join, the Discussion Group (NSRSG members only)

When you visit the egroups site again you'll need to remember your password.

The eGroups site is fully searchable. Thus if "North Staffordshire", for example, is typed in the search facility, it will show the nsrail list straightaway. There are quite a few other UK orientated railway discussion groups on eGroups, such as ukhrail for preservation railway topics, and railc for historic carriage and wagon restoration projects.

Happy surfing!
