Modelling the North Staffordshire Railway

Wizard Models 51L manufactures a range of 4mm wagon and van models under the 51L name. Wizard also acquired the Chowbent 4mm range of carriages a year ago. 51L includes two NSR wagons at the present time.

The 51L website lists a number of Historical Societies which are likely to be of interest to modellers viewing our site, including some brief information about the North Staffordshire Railway. Wizard Models may be contacted at: PO Box225, Macclesfield , Cheshire, SK10 4GB or by email.

The following 4mm scale NSR carriage kits are available from Bill Bedford Models

  • Diagram 1 35'6" CL            not yet available
  • Diagram 2 35'6" C              available
  • Diagram 4 35'6" T               available
  • Diagram 5 35'6" BT            available
  • Diagram 20 29'3" PLV       not yet available

The kits cost £21.00 each. They include a turned end middle axle and a cunning working radial truck and sprung axles incorporating a Cleminson type arrangement. They could build up at P4 or EM without any difficulty. Axleboxes need to be found, from 51L for example, and some suitable seating.

The kits consist of etched underframe and body (sides and ends). The underframe is off the old Milk Van kit and has had the truck sides added so at least you don't have to make too many modifications. I've built three of the above now, they fit well, and the standard of etching is excellent.

The kits have all been drawn and produced from NSR drawings so they are accurate to type. Further NSR coaches are planned, including a non-radial PLV (D20) with flat ends - the one that was built, not the tumblehome version that never did get built. The production of the next batch of coaches depends on getting the drawings to Bill, so we should have a good range of stock soon.

Markits also have NSR Adams/Field chimneys suitable for the Longbottom engines, the K class and the M/H classes. They are turned brass and very nice. They also do injectors which are suitable for the NSR, as do Jackson - Evans.

London Road Models are currently advertsing the forthcoming introduction of a range of NSR carriages in 4mm scale, to accompany their models of Classes B (2-4-0T and 2-4-2T variants) and D.

A 4mm scale kit of an NSR Cowan & Sheldon crane is available from D & S Models, 46 The Street, Wallington, Baldock, Hertfordshire tel: 01763 288353

Chowbent (Bryan Jones) have produced 7mm kits for the L, New L, and D class locos, and D22, D24 & D26 coaches. Quality is up to the usual Chowbent standard, which is excellent, but not for the beginner due to the basic nature of the (original) instructions.

Bill Bedford Models also produce kits for the 7mm modeller as follows:

  • Aeroplane or Milk Van        available
  • Diagram 1 35'6" CL            not yet available
  • Diagram 2 35'6" C              available
  • Diagram 4 35'6" T               available
  • Diagram 5 35'6" BT            available
  • Diagram 20 29'3" PLV       not yet available
  • 20T Break Van                    available

Models of the following items of 'Loop Line' stock are forecast: BT, F and T.
